About SAM PERCIVAL
Sam is an RICS chartered, North Devon building surveyor, offering listed and non-listed building surveys and architectural design services.
My 1970's Torridge & North Devon upbringing in the company of my architect father, inspired in me an early appreciation of the local rural, vernacular building traditions. James Ravilious' work, which captures this period in time, was and still remains a huge influence.
My education began at a tiny primary school in the village of West Putford before advancing to the seemingly edgy and hectic comprehensive school located in Bideford. In 1996, under the stewardship of the pioneering building conservationists John Ashurst, Bruce Induni and Caroline Ryan, I graduated with a degree in Building Conservation Technology. In 2005 I acquired a post-graduate degree in building surveying from Southbank University, London, and in 2007 qualified as an RICS Chartered building surveyor.
Between 1999 and 2004 I travelled and moved about the country extensively working alongside Engineers and Architects within the UK and Australia.
In 2002 I bought a dilapidated 17th Century Grade II listed North Devon cob, stone and thatch cottage and undertook a hands-on conservation lead repair of the building.
In 2004 I joined London based engineering and surveying firm AKSWard / ListerBeare, establishing a position within the firm’s specialist conservation division. Here I was to lead a number of large commercial conservation projects including the repair and cleaning of the former Dickins and Jones department store on Regent Street, the multi-million pound repair of Oxford Street's Selfridges and the repair of the Granary Building at Kings Cross, as well as numerous other projects across the country.
Between 2007 and 2011 I sat on the Building Limes Forum Committee assuming the role of Newsletter Editor and in 2007 assisted in the organization of the 2007 Building Limes Forum Conference at the Greenwich Navel College.
In 2010 I returned to North Devon, setting up my own firm, offering surveying and architectural design services. One of my early projects involving the conservation and enlargement of an existing 17th century Grade II listed townhouse, went on to win an award at the 2014 RICS Awards.
In 2015 I qualified as an RICS Conservation Accredited Building Surveyor, one of only 113 worldwide, and shortly after was accepted as an Exeter Diocese Approved Quinquennial Church Inspector.
