ABOUT SAM PERCIVAL

Sam is an RICS chartered, North Devon building surveyor, offering listed and non-listed building surveys and architectural design services.

My 1970s Torridge & North Devon upbringing, in the company of my Architect father, inspired in me an early appreciation of the local rural and vernacular building traditions. James Ravilious's work, which captures this period in time, was and still remains a huge influence of mine.

I began my education at a tiny primary school in the village of West Putford before advancing to the seemingly edgy and hectic comprehensive located in nearby Bideford. In 1996, under the stewardship of the pioneering building conservationists; John Ashurst, Bruce Induni and Caroline Ryan, I graduated with a degree in Building Conservation Technology. In 2005 I acquired a post-graduate degree in building surveying from Southbank University, London, and in 2007 qualified as an RICS Chartered building surveyor.

Between 1999 and 2004 I travelled and moved about the country extensively working alongside Engineers and Architects in the UK and Australia.

In 2002 I bought a dilapidated 17th Century Grade II listed North Devon cob, stone and thatch cottage and undertook a hands-on conservation lead repair of the building.

In 2004 I joined London based engineering firm AKSWard / Lister Beare, establishing a position within the firm’s specialist conservation division under Director, Micheal Beare. Here I was to lead a number of large commercial conservation projects including the repair and cleaning of the former Dickins and Jones department store on Regent Street, the multi-million pound repair of Oxford Street's Selfridges and the repair of the Granary Building at Kings Cross, as well as numerous other projects  across the country.

Between 2007 and 2011 I sat on the Building Limes Forum Committee assuming the role of Newsletter Editor and in 2007 assisted in the organization of the 2007 Building Limes Forum Conference at the Greenwich Navel College.

In 2010 I returned to North Devon, setting up as sole practitioner, offering surveying and architectural design services. One of my early projects, 12 Bude Street, Appledore, involving the conservation and enlargement of an existing 17th century Grade II listed townhouse, went on to win an award at the RICS 2014 South West Awards.

In 2015 I became an RICS Conservation Accredited Building Surveyor, one of only 113 worldwide, and shortly after was accepted as an Exeter Diocese Approved Quinquennial Church Inspector.
